Description

A pioneering and stylish mixed use scheme, the Wenlock Building, developed jointly with Londonewcastle in conjunction with Workspace PLC, offers that rarest juxtaposition in London – city centre living within a canal-side environment.

Perfectly balanced with the hustle and bustle of city life right on the doorstep, yet tucked away enough for residents to step back and relax in ambient waterside surroundings; the Wenlock Building has proved popular with first time buyers and young professionals.

The new development comprises 55 private apartments and penthouses. There is also 35,000 sq ft of office and restaurant/bar accommodation, which has been handed back to Workspace PLC as part of the development agreement, and 27 units for Family Mosaic Housing Association.

With the exterior architecture by award winning Hawkins Brown reflecting the vernacular of the area, the scheme sits comfortably in its quiet, yet central location.

The interiors continue to meet the building’s high standard. United House Developments selected international interior designer specialists Johnson Naylor to ensure the apartments are of highest quality and have a cutting edge, contemporary feel.

The penthouse suite spans over two floors and treats visitors to light, spacious, contemporary rooms with the iconic London views of The London Eye and The Gherkin in the background.

The apartments feature contemporary and spacious interiors with fully-fitted high specification kitchens and bathrooms, basalt or engineered hardwood floors, 80/20 chinchilla wool carpets to bedrooms and under floor heating throughout.

Challenges

The largest challenge at the Wenlock Building was the adjoining canal. Water needed to be kept off site at all times, due to the deep basement construction on all four sides of the building, a specific retaining system had to be installed. De-watering measures were also put into place in accociation with the British Waterways Authority.

Due to the canal-side location and the surrounding road being on a one-way system a complex logistics plan was put into place to ensure deliveries were made with as little distruption to the canal boat and nearby residents as possible. Deliveries were also kept small in size as storage space on site was very restricted.

Awards

Wenlock Building has won several awards including ‘Best Apartment in London’ at the UK Property Awards and ‘Best Apartment Scheme’ at the What House Awards.
