Description

A joint venture with Londonewcastle, Arundel Square launched in September 2009.

This scheme completes the missing fourth side to the historic square and comprises 146 new units, 115 for private sale and 31 for affordable housing for Family Mosaic Housing Association.

Situated within the desirable Barnsbury conservation area overlooking the established garden square, this new development is designed by award-winning architects Pollard Thomas Edwards in collaboration with Tara Bernard’s interior design company Target Living.

Arundel Square offers thirty-two diferent apartment configurations. Each features high quality materials throughout including wood flooring, composite stone kitchen surfaces and a range of high end fittings. Large open plan living spaces and extensive glazing ensure that apartments and penthouses bring the outside in.

Challenges

Arundel Square represents not only an inspired architectural achievement but also an impressive engineering feat. The square was never completed in the Victorian era and during the ensuing years the North London railway line was constructed in a cutting on the south side of the gardens.

The project began by sealing and encasing the submerged line with a reinforced concrete deck. The ingenuity of this process facilitated the successful delivery of the development and enabled the garden square to be extended.

Today the new private, residents-only access road runs over the encased railway lines and Arundel Square completes the square for the first time in its history.

Integral to the new development has been the incorporation and restoration of the traditional garden square. Working with an ecoconsultant, the square’s topography contrasts existing mature trees with new planting, complementing the surrounding edifices and adding a sense of modernity. A balance of light and shaded areas across the green space offers seclusion and tranquillity. The landscaping draws influence from the square’s Victorian past, while new plantings enrich the overall view.

During construction ‘bathroom pods’ were compiled off-site. The Pods provide a high quality product manufactured in factory conditions and ensures this high quality and standard is not lost between factory and installation.

This time-saving technique allowed bathrooms to be constructed ahead of programme and then lifted into place without the need for any further installing or plumbing.
